Why Cloud Now? Why Not Server?

Posted By

When did things go up a Cloud? Not a real cloud but to a computer far far away.
But wait a minute… Isn’t that what servers does? but servers were long there in the market, then how did the term cloud computing come into picture. Is this another re-branding by those ad-men?

Servers were always confused with clouds. Yeah, both are quite similar but it is the usage that makes it quite different. In the recent past, companies used to run short but multiple parallel programs on their servers and our home computers used to process the rest of them. Then came Mobile phones….
Yeah, cell phones were the biggest headache for companies who do not like to evolve into new technologies. It changed the entire landscape of servers, they were required to do more, because a mobile cannot. Why is the reason your mobile can do so much? Siri, Cortana, Google now; heck your mobile doesn’t do much at all. It just sends the data and receives the answer back, its the best cheat yet. This is where cloud computing comes in; Invisible tasks.

Cloud Computing is the idea of computing as a utility. It is a technology that uses the internet and multiple central remote servers to maintain data and applications. Often bumping the data from one center to the other for security. Cloud computing allows consumers and businesses to use applications without installation and access their personal files at any computer with internet access, which was brilliantly used by team Google to use Android app features without downloading in Android N.

Cloud computing removes the need to purchase physical servers by providing these services over the web. Just need to create an account on Amazon Web Services and set up a virtual server (EC2) and data storage (S3) all your system via the internet. Pricing is usage-based, meaning that you pay for exactly the amount of computing power and data storage you use.
Companies that provide cloud computing services (Amazon, Microsoft, Google) purchase server farms themselves and then make money by charging users for access via the internet for computing power and data storage on their servers. This is a significant innovation because it’s exponentially cheaper and more efficient for anyone to run a web application.

Cloud Computing is actually made up of three service models:

  • IAAS – Infrastructure as a Service
Provision of servers or virtual servers that companies can use on a pay-as-you-go basis, like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
Its like renting an apartment.
  • PAAS – Platform as a Service
Includes a set of lower level services such as an operating system or computer language interpreter offered by a cloud provider on which developers can build custom applications. A few examples include OpenShift (Redhat), Cloud Foundry (VM Ware), Google App Engine.
Its like paying for electricity at your apartment.
  • SAAS – Software as a Service
Software that you access simply by navigating there in a web browser.  Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Google Docs are all examples of SaaS.  People have been using SaaS for a long time.

It is difficult to be a new player in the cloud computing market where hardware consolidation is the key, but as consumer there couldn’t have been anything better. No more big hardware, no more heavy duty software, slim laptops, phones, even home automation’s and cloud printers.
But wait isn’t that Internet of things (IoT) ?
